The Victorian Scrapbook by George Burgess
The scrapbook of George Burgess covers most of his working life from the 1850's to 1900's and consists of Victorian Newspaper cuttings, mostly undated, and mostly from British newspapers (includes a few American newspaper articles). As he ran out of space he stuck newer cuttings over older articles. A few of the articles have come adrift and most have deteriorated with age. However, this scrapbook is notable in that it gives insight into George Burgess as a person, as he selected (as anyone would) articles to which he could relate. Articles reflecting his views and topics of interest to him including Family, Health and Education, Humour, Poetry, Politics and History, Religion, Science and Nature, Temperance (Drink) and Victorian Culture.
