Charles was chairman of the Minchinhampton Parish Council for many years and he was presented with a clock with and inscription commemorating his year's of service with the council. The clock was on show in the Bell Inn. On one occasion following a council meeting, Charles was being driven home in a pony and trap by his son George, when they were confronted by a large pile of stones in the road placed there by a group of potential robbers.
