James was born at Chichester and attended the Blue coats School there. He later joined the British Police Force and retired from the rank of Sergeant. He and Hilda had two daughters and a son. They lived at Worthing, Sussex

"While shopping with his wife, Sergt. Chappelle saw Eileen Mary Underwood, 22 married woman, of Teville-road, Worthing, pick up a bottle of shampoo in Woolworths Stores, and walk away without paying for it. He followed her into the street challenged her, and she then said she would pay for the shampoo. She was taken into custody and when her shopping bag was searched, other articles were found. To-day, at Worthing, Under-wood was bound over for two years and ordered to pay 30s. costs for stealing the shampoo and other articles and for stealing a dress valued two pounds five shillings and sixpence from Kinch and Lack.

She pleaded guilty and asked for another charge concerning theft of a blouse valued 10s. (ten shillings) from Bentalls to be taken into consideration."

Hilda had been a widow for many years and living alone. At age 93 years she died on 3rd September 2002 and was cremated 8 days later. Parents: Arthur CHAPPELL and Elizabeth Florence CLARK.

Minnie CHAPPELL was born on 27 July 1881 in Bath, Somerset. She died on 8 May 1945 at the age of 63 in Sodbury. During the first world war Fred Chappell son of Edwin Chappell visited Minnie and her sister Ada who lived together with Ada's daughter Annie. The ladies corresponded with Fred and the Australian relatives.

Minnie was unmarried and kept house for Ada and Annie. A room of this home was also let to a school-teacher as her means of support. Minnie had a dog and as one can see from the photograph, the dog was a delight to her.

On 8th May, 1845, the day war came to an end she heard a band playing in Lansdown Road and went to the window to see what it was all about. She put her hand on some wire above a window box for support; the wire gave way and she fell to her death. Parents: Edwin CHAPPELL and Harriet OATEN.
